┋’Sit.’ he spoke, tapping a spot in front of the bench with the tip of his sword. She, who had followed behind, eerily moved across the stone steps towards that spot, as if hovering. As she sat on the bed of grass and flowers, he circled the bench.
Hearing the rustling of his clothes quiet down, she turned her eyes around, straight into his. The world seemed to have frozen, locked between their glances. The violent blow of wind broke night’s tranquil silence, and with that, his eyes darted across her figure. She was too calm, he thought to himself, her hands in her lap.
‘Give me your hand.’ he said as he raised his. He squeezed hers, as if attempting to stop time again. She shifted and pushed his fingers open. ‘Do it quick, painless. Don’t hesitate.’ she said, firmly.
He raised the sword and took a deep breath. Jaws clenched, he angled the sword down but stopped. ‘I can’t.’ he interrupted himself. ‘I can’t bring myself to.’ he continued, lowering his arm. ‘You must. The Gods asked for a sacrifice. For this sacrifice.’ she replied with a nod. ‘There has to be something else!’ he almost yelled with a touch of exasperation in his voice. ‘There’s not, and you know it. Do it. It’s the only way.’ she smiled and blinked slowly. ‘Quick and painless.’
He clenched his fist around the handle. As he steadily raised the sword, he swallowed the knot in his throat. He would do it. He would plunge the blade in his beloved and bathe the metal, temper it in her blood. Then he would take that same blade and drive it through the necks of all immortals, gods and the likes, until none were left anymore. They asked for a sacrifice and a sacrifice he would give them.┋
